Sam Hazo, Guest Artist
Last Tuesday our band program had the great opportunity to host Sam Hazo on our campus. Mr. Hazo is a world famous composer and music educator. He worked with our intermediate and advanced band students last Tuesday morning, teaching them everything from breathing techniques to the thought process involved with composing a piece. The kids had a lot of fun with Mr. Hazo and certainly broadened their musical awareness. To learn more about Sam Hazo, please see his website at www.samuelrhazo.com

Saxophone Seminars
Our intermediate band saxophones have had two guest artists working with them for the past two weeks; Mr. Gary Paulo and Mr. Fred Norton. Both are professional musicians and educators in the area who specialize on saxophone.

Leadership
The second half of the leadership seminar with Gary Gribble will take place next Monday, November 3rd, from 4-6 in the bandroom. For further details, please check your email and the website.

Practice Logs
Every student should be showing a practice log to Mr. Wright or myself at the first band meeting of each week. Practice logs are a component of each student's assessment, and will be noted on their narratives.

Clarinet Seminars
For the next two Thursdays, Fred Norton will be working with our intermediate band clarinets during their regular band time. Mr. Norton is the assistant band director at Hightower Trail Middle School, and a woodwind specialist.

Bands of America
This Friday and Saturday at the Georgia Dome, some of the best high school marching bands from across the country will be competing in a major competition. This event is sponsored by Bands of America. If your student enjoys marching band, this event will showcase the highest level of that activity. For more information and ticket sales, go to www.musicforall.org

Leadership Seminar
Last Wednesday, 37 band students participated in an exciting, motivational leadership workshop led by Gary Gribble, Director of Bands at Pope HS. Our students were treated to numerous hands-on activities and real-life stories about the importance of personal responsibility and commitment, both as individuals and members of a group. Band members always cite Mr. Gribble's many stories as their favorite part of his workshops. They enjoy hearing about the adversities and triumphs of past students and relating them to their own lives.

Part 2 of this seminar will be held in the HMS bandroom on Monday, November 3rd, from 4-6.

Final Fall Drumline Performance
The HMS Fall Drumline will perform this Friday, October 17th, as guests of the Pope HS band during the home game versus Wheeler.

Smartmusic
Smartmusic assignments are now being made weekly for all band members. If your student has Smartmusic at home, please check the assignments regularly. If your family does not have Smartmusic, it is available on the 6 computers in the bandroom and music room.

Many parents and students attended the Smartmusic informational session hosted by Mr. Wright last Wednesday after school. It is an exciting and valuable tool for all musicians on many levels. If you have questions or concerns regarding Smartmusic and it's implementation in our music program, or how it can benefit your student, please check the HMS music website. If you still have questions after reading the information on the website, please contact Mr. Wright at pwright@highmeadows.org

Please continue to check the music website and calendar regularly for updates.

This Wednesday, October 8th, is part 1 of our 2 part Leadership Seminar taught by Gary Gribble.

SCHEDULE

All registered students should report to the music room immediately after school. Please send a snack or late lunch with your student. We will have time after school to relax and eat before the seminar begins at 4PM in the bandroom. Light snacks and water will be provided by the music department.

WHAT TO BRING

Students should bring a notebook and pencil to the seminar.

SMARTMUSIC TRAINING

Mr. Wright will be hosting the Smartmusic overview in the music room during the snack time (3:15-3:55) for interested parents and students.

ATTENDEES

Only students whose parents have sent me an email allowing them to participate will be able to attend the Leadership Seminar. Since it is an afterschool event, I must have written permission from every parent. If a student shows up and I have not received email confirmation from their parents, they will be sent to the office and their parents will be called to pick them up.

Please check the list, emailed out on Sunday, to make sure your child is signed up if they plan to attend the seminar. If they are not listed and you would like for them to participate, please email me ASAP.

***All band students are welcome and encouraged to attend whether or not they want to be considered for a leadership position in the band***

It's going to be a great afternoon of learning and camaraderie. Thanks for allowing your students to participate.

Sincerely,
Paula Williams

Mr. Wright has sent the following information to all band families:

There will be a SmartMusic informational session on October 8th from 3:15-4:00 P.M. in the Music Room at High Meadows. This session’s purpose will be to answer any questions you may have about SmartMusic including purchase, installation, enrollment, and general use of the product. If you would like to attend, please email me.  There is a leadership seminar for interested band students beginning at 4:00 P.M. that same day (information regarding this seminar was sent out last week and can be found on the website). High Meadows Bands Leadership Seminar 2008

The HMS music department is sponsoring a two-session leadership seminar for all interested band members on October 8th and November 3rd from 4-6PM.

ALL STUDENTS WANTING TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A LEADERSHIP POSITION IN ANY BAND MUST ATTEND BOTH SESSIONS.

While participation in the seminar does not GUARANTEE a leadership position, it is a mandatory pre-requisite for consideration.

By the same token, band students who do not want to be a part of the student leadership team but simply want to become better band members and academic students are welcome to attend.

The leadership seminar will be taught by Gary Gribble, Director of Bands at Pope High School. Mr. Gribble has extensive experience in the area of training student leaders, both at Pope High School and around the country. He regularly speaks to school music programs, student leadership teams, band directors, and parents of young musicians throughout the year, as his motivational and exciting methods of hands-on leadership techniques inspire students and adults to do their best, not only as members of their school music programs, but as individuals in all areas of life.

All interested students must sign-up via email to paulawilliams@highmeadows.org no later than 3 PM, October 3rd.

Mr. Wright and I are very excited that Mr. Gribble has agreed to structure a student leadership program around our particular needs as a band program at High Meadows. Student participants will have a great time learning proven techniques and methods for success in working with others, time management skills, and being the best you can be no matter what you are doing.

We look forward to having a great turnout for this program. Your kids WILL benefit from their experience with Mr. Gribble and have a great time doing so.

As always, thanks for your continued support of our music program at High Meadows School.

Sincerely,

Paula Williams and Patrick Wright

As usual, there is a lot happening in the music department this week.

Advanced and Intermediate Band

  • This is the final week of combined intermediate and advanced band morning rehearsals.
  • Uniform measurements will be taken for each member of these two bands this week during rehearsal.
  • Practice logs are due on Tuesday mornings.

***PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BAND T-SHIRTS GIVEN TO YOUR STUDENTS FOR POPE NIGHT WILL BE THEIR INFORMAL CONCERT ATTIRE. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT BE WEARING THEM TO SCHOOL, AS THEY NEED TO BE CLEAN AND PRESENTABLE FOR CONCERTS WHERE WE WILL NOT BE WEARING OUR FORMAL BLACK AND WHITE UNIFORMS.***

Advanced Band

Beginning next Monday, September 29th, the Advanced Band will no longer have morning rehearsals. I know that is great news for everyone who has been getting their band member to school early each week for the past two years.

They begin band as a mini-course, and practice logs will be due each Monday.

SmartMusic is here!  Details on enrolling for the online class will be handed out next week during regular class time.  Visit smartmusic.com to order your home subscription today!

Beginning Band

Next Monday, September 29, Mr. Wright is in an all-day PYP training session. Gary Gribble and Josh Rudolph, the Pope High School band directors, will be instructing the beginning band that morning at their regularly scheduled class time, 9-9:45.

Band Forms and Fees

Many families still have outstanding band forms and fees. Those need to be into the band office by the end of this week. If you cannot get your information or fees to us by this Friday, September 26, please send us an email letting us know.

Even if you are a returning band member and have filled out informational forms in the past, we need an updated information sheet for the 2008-2009 school year.

All forms can be found on the music website.

Calendars

Please check the website calendars regularly to stay updated on music department events.

Drumline

  • The final performance of the Fall drumline is October 17th at Pope HS as part of the Pope vs. Wheeler football game.
  • We are rehearsing each Tuesday from 3-4 through October 14 in preparation for that performance.
  • More details regarding this performance to follow.

Drum Club

Session I drum club meets for the second time this Wednesday, September 24,  from 3-3:40.

3rd, 4th, 5th grade General Music

ALL students in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades must have a recorder and the Recorder Express music book ASAP. Books and recorders were to be in class following Labor Day, yet we still have many students without these materials.  If needed, further details can be found on the music website.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO CHECK THE WEBSITE REGULARLY FOR UPDATED INFORMATION REGARDING THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT.
