I will take you through what the program does and how to use it with your student. Thank you, Patrick Wright posted 8/21/10 Thank you to everyone who attended the band parent meeting last Wednesday, August 18. There is a lot of excitement about the band and music program this year, and it is great to know there are so many supportive parents behind all of the young musicians here at High Meadows. Below is a recap of the most important points discussed at the meeting. 2010/2011 Band Parent Handbooks were distributed: The band handbook is an essential reference tool for parents and students alike. If any band family does not have a 2010-2011 copy, please contact the band directors by email so a copy can be given to your band student to bring home. A copy can also be downloaded from the Music department website by clicking "Downloads" the " Band Handbook". Three essential information forms were distributed;
The annual $300 band participation fee is due in the bandroom no later than Friday, August 27. Please make checks payable to High Meadows School. The fee is non-refundable. Music Enrichment Program flyers reviewed: In addition to last week's backpack mail distribution, the flyers can also be found on the music website. Leadership Seminar: Band members interested in being considered for a leadership position must attend the session on Friday, September 17. Additional information can be found on the Music department website. SmartMusic Tutorial: All band students will be using SmartMusic as part of their band class. Mr. Wright will hold a tutorial session for parents on Tuesday, August 31 from 8:15 AM - 8:45 AM in the Music room. posted 8/17/10 PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE EMAIL, AS IT CONTAINS IMPORTANT, TIME-SENSITIVE INFORMATION. Dear 4/5 Band Parents, Welcome to the new school year, and another great year of band at High Meadows School. BAND/MUSIC Department Website Please consult the music website daily by going to my.highmeadows.org, then click "music department" on the opening page. It is the most current, comprehensive website for all things "music" at High Meadows School. BAND PARENT MEETING Tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday, August 18, from 5-6PM ALL band parents should plan to attend the annual band parent meeting. We will discuss the new band program structure, the band handbook, uniforms, highlights for the upcoming year, and all other pertinent band information regarding the 2010-2011 school year. 4/5 BAND STARTS TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18 All 4/5 band members will report to the bandroom TOMORROW from 9-9:45AM for their regularly scheduled bi-weekly music special. We will see them again on Friday, from 9-9:45AM. Their weekly schedule can be found on the music website by clicking on the "Classroom Notes" tab. INSTRUMENT RENTAL/PURCHASE ON CAMPUS Next Tuesday, August 24, from 3-5PM in the bandroom, Ken Stanton Music Store will be here to rent or sell band instruments as a courtesy to our band families. If you need to rent or purchase an instrument for your child, please come to the bandroom at that time. You will work directly with representatives from the music store to determine what method of purchase or rental will work best for your family. The store will then deliver all the instruments to our school on Friday, August 27. Your child will be given their instrument Saturday morning, August 28th, at the beginning of the 4/5 Band Carnival. Neither Patrick Wright nor I have anything to do with the business end of renting or purchasing instruments. We will both be there, but the music store representatives will be working with you to answer all of your questions. 4/5 Band Carnival Next Saturday, August 28, from 9:30AM-12:30PM, all 4/5 members are expected to attend the HMS Band Carnival. We have hired a professional musician and educator for each of the eight band instruments to introduce the 4th graders to their instruments, and refresh the 5th graders on the intricacies of their instruments. Each professional will work with members of their section to demonstrate care and maintenance of the instrument, proper holding and playing technique, how to make a characteristic sound, and a secret or two that only specialists know! In addition to all the great instruction and learning that will take place, we will have some fun along the way and end the morning with a pizza party. Please make EVERY effort to attend this event. It is a critical start on the instrument for our 4th graders, and an exciting opportunity for growth for our 5th graders. Not many young students have the opportunity for such a great jump-start to their first or early band experience. As always, please check the music website regularly for any information you may need. Please feel free to email me with any further questions. We will see you at the parent meeting. Sincerely, Paula Williams Music Director, High Meadows School posted 7/27/10
July 26, 2010
Dear HMS Band Members and Families,
Welcome to the new school year and another exciting year for the HMS bands.
Last May our department graduated the largest class of Founding Members to date, with many of them set to continue band in high school. This school year we will graduate our final class of Founding Members; the final eight risk-takers who took a leap of faith 5 years ago, joined the very first HMS band, and have remained dedicated and loyal members ever since.
The Advanced Band will remain a daily mini-course that eligible students may choose for the school year. Advanced Band members will continue to develop their ensemble skills as the most performance-oriented band on campus, with their LGPE performance in March being the culminating showcase concert of the year. Student Conducting, Leadership Team, and Marching Band will continue being offered to interested AB members.
All 4th and 5th grade students can look forward to a restructuring and renaming of the Beginning Band to 4/5 Band. All 4/5 Band members will enjoy the opportunity to have band twice weekly for 45 minutes during the school day as their music special.
The 4th grade Band Carnival is a new element we are bringing to HMS band members this year. Our newest and youngest band members will be given their instrument for the first time on Saturday morning, August 27, from
Members of each band will continue to enjoy clinicians and specialists from all areas of instrumental performance and education. In the past few years we’ve been fortunate to host such artists as Sam Hazo, world famous composer, Dr. Scott Stewart, Music Director at Emory University, Mr. Gary Gribble, Director of Bands at Alan C. Pope HS, and many professional instrumentalists.
Another offering ALL band members should take advantage of this year is Wednesday Morning Lab. Please see the Band Handbook for more details on this weekly opportunity for more detailed and individualized instruction at no cost outside of your annual band participation fee.
The music website continues to be your most comprehensive and up to date source for the entire HMS music department. Please check it regularly by clicking the music department link on the opening page of my.highmeadows.org
Feel free to email Patrick Wright or me at any time with questions or concerns regarding your student and the HMS band program.
Sincerely,
Paula Williams, Band Director Patrick Wright, Assistant Band Director
